Support Groups

ILR has a long history of hosting a wide variety of classes and support groups for consumers with disabilities.

These have ranged from Art, Braille, and Cooking classes to Rentwell, Healing Pathways, Healthy Lifestyles, and Crossroads Traumatic Brain Injury Support Group.  Due to the pandemic, most ILR groups have been on hold with the TBI Group and The Advocacy Team remaining active on a remote basis.  As we move out of the pandemic in 2023 and 2024, ILR expects to renew and restore more in-person group activities for people with disabilities.

Traumatic Brain Injury

ILR has been hosting the Crossroads Traumatic Brain Injury Support Group for more than 20 years.  Psychologist Ryan Skelton, Psy.D, facilitates these twice-a-month meetings.  The format for the sessions combines TBI educational material, guest speakers and guided peer discussion among members.  Many participating consumers are also working with Dr. Skelton or another ILR Peer Specialist to develop and implement personal goals for living more independently in the community.  Support group sessions are still currently remote meetings, although ILR expects to return to in-person meetings later in 2023.

Long Covid

ILR launched a Public Health Initiative in 2022 with federal funding by hiring a naturopathic physician to lead the development of two activities.  Dr. Michelle Williams, ND. is working to expand ILR’s community partnerships with public health departments in Clackamas, Multnomah, and Washington counties.  She sits on a variety of advisory boards to better develop an awareness of ILR as a resource for people with disabilities accessing public health services.

In 2023, part of this Public Health Initiative will involve the development and posting of Long Covid Patient Resources available from various sources around the US.  ILR hopes to be able to connect with other CILs to create a national network of CILs advocating for enhanced CIL-based services for consumers experiencing Long Covid symptoms.
